Ferragosto is a big annual holiday in Italy (originally a religious day) and in modern times many Italians celebrate with a day at the beach. It is one day officially, 15th August, but many events happen in the week that it falls in and Italians often base their summer holidays around this date.
Spending Ferragosto in Tuscany is an excellent idea. Here are some tips for a different 15 August holiday for those who want to stay away from the crowded beaches. Mid-August in Tuscany is not just the ocean, it is also events and festivals and good food and a very relaxing time in good company.


On 15 August the traditional Giostra del Saracino is held in the picturesque village of Sarteano. This deeply rooted tradition is revived every year on 15th August. This competition evokes the ancient equestrian game with the knights fighting against the Arab marauders. The town neighbourhoods challenge each other on horseback in the main square.
Attending the Giostra del Saracino in Sarteano is a great experience, surrounded by glittering medieval costumes with the drums playing rhyhtmically and the horses’ pawing.

The famous Palio di Siena certainly needs no introduction.  It takes place every year on 16 August in honor of the Madonna Assunta and is an extraordinary horseback riding competition in one of the most beautiful squares in the world, Piazza del Campo. A vibrant tradition at the core of Siena’s life and history that involves Siena’s neighbourhoods throughout the year and reaches its apex when the competition takes place. It is an intriguing and fascinating experience We all – whether we are tourists, travelers or locals  – need to nourish a profound respect for this deeply rooted tradition.
